Our Story

Over 50 years of family-owned Canadian manufacturing

Butterfly Sprinkler Products is a family-operated manufacturer of all-metal sprinkler products, providing employment opportunity to BC's West Kootenay. Our facility is located in Hall Siding, approximately 15 minutes up the mountainside from Nelson, BC — convenient depending on who you ask, but sacrifices must be made for quality.

For more than 50 years, Butterfly Sprinkler Products has been proudly family-owned and Canadian-made. Our belief is simple: buy it once, and rely on it for life. Every product is crafted with durability, integrity, and true Canadian workmanship.

Our products are all-metal construction. No plastic components that become brittle from UV or extreme Canadian climates. This isn't just marketing — our all-metal product line occupies a genuine niche that doesn't compete with foreign plastic imports. We build things differently because we believe the world needs less cheap products filling the landfills.

As a family-owned business, we carry on a tradition established by three generations of owners who proved that a small business can be competitive if you maintain the basic principles of quality and customer service. Our products are standard equipment in BC WildFire's Structure Protection Unit trailers — trusted by the agencies that protect our communities.

We hope you will give us the opportunity to prove that we can deliver on those principles.

Guaranteed for Life

Butterfly Sprinkler Products takes pride in supplying products designed for a long usable life. If a defect prevents your purchase from functioning as intended, return the item to us, or email a photo/video clip demonstrating the defect. We will repair or provide a replacement (shipping charged at cost).

Wear of rotating parts is a normal effect of usage. Extended operation of sprinkler head at high water pressures (>50 psig) will reduce the usable life.

Our History

~1960s

The Beginning

Peter Makortoff begins manufacturing the gravity-cast aluminum butterfly sprinkler head, along with all-metal sprinkler spike and sled bases, in the Slocan Valley, southeastern BC. Some of this original equipment is still in use today.

1975

A New Chapter

Frank and Gail Powell acquire the operation from Peter Makortoff, move it to Crescent Valley, and formally establish Butterfly Sprinkler Products.

1975–2014

Four Decades of Growth

Frank expands the product line, improves the sprinkler head design for greater durability and longer life on moving parts. Nearly 40 years of continuous operation serving the BC gardening and fire suppression community.

2014

New Ownership

Tammie and Peter Douglass acquire the business from the Powells. The company incorporates as Butterfly Sprinkler Products (2014) Inc. and relocates to Hall Siding near Nelson, BC. Sales more than double under new ownership.

Present

Continuing the Legacy

Under the ownership of Evan Cope and Andrea Spencer, the legacy continues. Products are standard equipment in BC WildFire's Structure Protection Unit (SPU) trailers. Expanding into additional government contracts across Western Canada.
